Assessing the Impact of a New Physical Activity Regulation in Massachusetts
The main purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a new physical activity regulation in Massachusetts, which will require 60 minutes of physical activity for all children in child care centers. Investigators will also: 1) validate a direct observation method to assess physical activity in 3- to 5-year old children using activity monitors; 2) assess Massachusetts child care center directors' knowledge of and compliance with the new physical activity policy; and 3) assess the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of child care center directors from Massachusetts after the policy implementation and the control state (Rhode Island) toward physical activity for children in child care. The results from this study will be communicated to state regulators and other policy makers interested in improving physical activity regulations for licensed child care facilities. Investigators will host two informational conference calls for state child care regulator/licensing agencies to share results from the study.
