Beyond Complete Streets: Reclaiming America’s Streets to Promote Active, Healthy Living

Workshop at the 2014 Active Living Research Annual Conference.
Streets take up about 30% of the land area in the average American city. Why not use streets to promote active living and healthy communities instead of just for driving? Based on a two-year research effort funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, this session explored the additional functions and forms of well-designed streets to promote active living. re:Streets explores the future of streets and what America's roadways would be like if they were designed for living, instead of just driving. This interactive presentation included best practices, design guidelines and case studies, including low cost ideas that can be immediately implemented. Web resources available at www.restreets.org will be highlighted, including a free comprehensive design manual for creating streets that are truly for everyone.
