Data in Motion: Measuring Physical Activity Using Population-based Data

Workshop at the 2014 Active Living Research Annual Conference.
This workshop provided a forum for teaching about physical activity measures available in the California Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (CA BRFSS). Specifically, the presenters explained how to use SAS code to construct meaningful physical activity measures that assess overall minutes and metabolic equivalent units (METs) of physical activity among adults. In addition, the workshop demonstrated an innovative data collection method using Smartphones and an online, secure web survey to collect data in real-time from the audience. The CA BRFSS collects data on physical activity practices of adults. When properly analyzed, the data includes answers to questions about time spent doing physical activity and specific types of physical activity done. The Survey Research Group of the Public Health Institute has adapted methods developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to code the CA BRFSS physical activity variables into measures that provide estimates of meeting the guidelines for adults of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity, 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of both every week. The physical activity module collects population-based data that provide a rich resource that characterizes physical activity for diverse populations and regions of California.
