This dissertation study studied the ½ mile area around transit stations along the DART lightrail system in Dallas, Texas. The area around each of 34 stations was examined for walkability based on environmental factors such as availability of sidewalks, number of curb cut-outs at intersections, and commercial and residential land-use. Density variables such as population, employment and housing around the station were also studied. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used to analyze the above determinants and a Pedestrian Suitability Index was developed for each of the stations. The highest scoring stations were further studied to understand transit choices people make and to suggest new policy implications to encourage higher activity levels in transit communities.
