Evaluation of Instant Recess Activity Breaks as a Means for Implementing LAUSD Physical Activity Policy in Elementary and Middle Schools
The purpose of this project was to systematically compare the Instant Recess physical activity intervention to existing curricula and training provided to schools supporting the implementation of the California state regulatory policy to increase physical activity in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) elementary and middle schools. Changes in student levels of physical activity were measured using pedometers and the System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time (SOFIT). Questionnaires and logs measured the impact of the teacher trainings. The project has implications for school districts around the country as the childhood obesity epidemic spurs the passage of school physical activity promotion policies with untested effectiveness. The Instant Recess model could serve as successful model to meet increased school physical activity policies.
