Defining Activity-Friendly Environments in the Rural South
The southern portion of the United States leads the nation in poor health. Sixty-two percent of Alabama's 9th and 10th graders do not meet the Surgeon General's recommendations for physical activity; in Mississippi, 82% of adolescents do not engage in sufficient moderate-intensity physical activity. Four ethnically and geographically diverse, rural communities in Alabama and Mississippi will be studied by investigators to identify and better understand how environmental factors might support increased physical activity across the lifespan. Environmental factors to be studied include housing areas, work environment, school, church and transportation options. Information collected through in-depth interviews, focus groups, questionnaires and community audits will be used by the investigators to further develop a proposed conceptual model describing the relationships between the built environment, policy, and physical activity participation in rural communities.
