Urban Hispanic Perceptions of Environment and Activity Among Kids (UHPEAK)
Hispanics of all ages report lower levels of physical activity than Caucasians and these ethnic differences emerge in early childhood. The purpose of this project is to assess the intention to be physically active among fifth-grade Hispanic children in home, school, and park environments; to explore the association between intention to be physically active and actual physical activity; to assess perceptions among these children and their mothers about the physical activity friendliness of home, school, and park environments; and to assess the relationship of objective environmental cues to intention to be physically active at home, school, and park environments; and to explore multi-level factors that are associated with the intention to be active at home, school, and park environments among fifth-grade Hispanic boys and girls. Data on demographic information, anthropomorphic measures, and objective environmental cues will be collected at children’s schools, parks, and at home. Methods include the Ecological Momentary Assessment and accelerometry.
