What Motivates Policy Change? Understanding Why Some States Adopt Site Standard Policies that Promote Physical Activity
Minimum school acreage requirements for set at state and local levels influence school location, and school location largely determines how children get to and from school - walking, biking, or by car or bus. The purpose of this project was to examine the key factors that led states to change their school siting policy and rescind their minimum acreage requirements. The study explored whether eliminating minimum acreage requirements resulted in the development of smaller, more walkable schools. Interviews with key state-level informants identified factors that lead to changes in school size policies. A survey of school facility planners was conducted to understand the local impacts of state acreage policies.
