Park Renovation Impact on Physical Activity among Youth
The Trust for Public Land (TPL) obtained $8 million in funding needed to develop, design and install renovations for three playgrounds in San Francisco that are outdated and/or in poor condition, located generally within underserved, low-income neighborhoods that exhibit deficiency in quality park and recreation resources, have the greatest number of children, and rely the most on public spaces for their recreational needs. The study proposed is an evaluation of the process and the impact of the renovations on physical activity behavior among youth. The study will: 1) Identify which park features and cues contribute the most to moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among youth who use the parks; 2) Evaluate the impact of the park renovations on physical activity among local youth; and 3) Identify process components and contextual factors that contribute to success (or lack of success) of the park renovation in increasing MVPA among youth. Lessons from the evaluation may influence how future park renovations are conducted and implemented.
