School Reform: The Role of School and Physical Education Policy on Children's Physical Activity in Alabama's Black Belt Region
To increase children's school day physical activity, the Alabama Board of Education issued a mandate in Fall 2009 that required schools to provide daily, physical education for a minimum of 30 minutes per day by a certified physical education instructor. The purpose of this project is to investigate the role of state mandated policy and school policy on students' school-day physical activity in elementary schools located in the Macon County School District in the Black Belt Region of Alabama. A secondary purpose is to ascertain how stakeholders (i.e. administrators, physical education teachers, classroom teachers) meet these state mandated policies. Additionally, the project will discover factors that hinder or facilitate the implementation of these policies.
