Understanding the Impacts of Pedestrian and Bicycle Plans on Residents and Communities
This study will examine whether communities with pedestrian, bicycle, or combined plans have higher levels of investments on pedestrian and/or bicycle projects and have higher levels of physical activity than communities without plans. The project will also examine whether communities with pedestrian, bicycle, or combined plans have more projects, programs, and policies related to pedestrian and/or bicycle needs than communities without plans; and describe whether higher quality plans have higher levels of investments in pedestrian and/or bicycle projects and higher levels of physical activity than communities with lower quality plans or those without plans. The study will be conducted in North Carolina by using a database created of bicycle and pedestrian plans through 2010. The results of this study have the potential to provide further rationale for the creation and implementation of pedestrian and bicycle plans in the study state, with strong potential to influence action throughout the U.S.
