Healthy Afterschool Activity and Nutrition Documentation (HAAND)
The Healthy Afterschool Activity and Nutrition Documentation (HAAND) instrument consists of three sections. The first section collects basic information about the program. The next two sections consist of two separate scales – Healthy Afterschool Program Index for Physical Activity (HAPI-PA) and the HAPI-Nutrition (HAPI-N).
The Healthy Afterschool Activity and Nutrition Documentation (HAAND) instrument assesses the extent to which the afterschool environment meets current physical activity and nutrition policies. The HAAND instrument consists of three sections – The first section collects basic information regarding the program name, location, weather condition during the visit and, the number of children and staff present at the program during the visit. This section also includes questions related to the type of snack served on the day, whether staff consumed snack that was not available to kids and the total time allocated to physical activity opportunities in the program. The two other sections of the HAAND instrument consist of the Healthy Afterschool Program Index for Physical Activity scale (HAPI-PA) and the HAPI-Nutrition scale (HAPI-N). The HAPI-PA scale has a total of 7 categories and 11 items whereas; The HAPI-N scale has a total of 7 categories and 12 items. The HAAND instrument is a reliable and valid measurement tool that can be used to assess the physical activity and nutrition environment of afterschool programs (Ajja, et al, 2012).
The HAAND is designed to be collected via direct observation, a brief interview with afterschool program leader/site director and written document review during a single day visit to an afterschool program. The total scores for scale can be presented as either a continuous measure (e.g. 0-25 or 0-34) or as an ordinal rating based on a star system, where higher scores indicate a more supportive environment.
