Description:
Workshop at the 2013 Active Living Research Annual Conference.
This workshop began with a 15 minute introduction; defining Open Streets. The next hour was segmented into three 20-minute activities to guide participants through each of the workshop learning objectives.
- A university researcher with four years experience in evaluating San Francisco Sunday Streets used Google Maps and StreetView to illustrate how routes of Open Streets are best chosen by communities. Following a brief example using San Diego, the facilitator guided participants through a similar process using their home community. While discussing issues of feasibility, including terrain, emergency vehicle access, merchant buy-in, etc., the facilitator helped participants identify at least one potential route for a proposed Open Streets.
- With a potential route identified, a national-level practitioner, and developer of openstreetsproject.org, challenged participants to consider aspects of Open Streets that support sustainability and effectiveness of this community intervention. Using examples from more than 70 initiatives across the US, including recent interviews with Open Street organizers, the practitioner engaged participants to strategize their Open Streets implementation with evaluation in mind.
- The final 20 minutes of the course was devoted to evaluation of best practices with specific aspects identified in the preceding discussion. University researchers with three years experience in evaluating Open Streets ledparticipants outdoors and engaged visitors in participating in innovative, active evaluation techniques. The workshop closed with comments and questions. Participants were provided a list of best practices in identifying routes, planning with evaluation in mind, and evaluation techniques.
