The Mississippi Department of Transportation will have more funding to support its Safe Routes to School program, and communities will make infrastructure improvements that can increase physical activity, thanks to results from a study that focused on rural environments in Mississippi and Alabama. Some of the infrastructure changes will involve installation of new sidewalks and traffic calming measures, including a new median, raised crosswalks, and connecting sidewalks with the bicycle/pedestrian pathway. Additionally, one of the cities involved in the study is considering adopting policy that requires developers to contribute to the city’s complete streets objectives.
