If this project is successful, participants in future physical activity and travel behavior studies may be able to keep an activity diary simply by speaking into a small recorder at regular intervals prompted by a beep. The new E-diary system will use voice-recognition software and automatic scoring techniques to convert the verbal report into quantified data—ready for analysis. Zhu’s team is testing the accuracy of the E-Diary system by asking 30 participants to wear activity and GPS monitors while they record diary entries.
