Did the Recent Changes in Macro-Economic Conditions Affect Physical Activity?
This project explored if higher gasoline prices are associated with changes in 'active' physical activities and 'sedentary' physical activities among youth and families with children, and determine if changes vary by race-ethnicity and by socio-economic status. The project also examined the relationship between gasoline prices and physical activity changes when larger economic conditions, proxied by the unemployment rate, also change. Data came from multiple years of data from two large, secondary, national-level datasets (American Time Use Survey and National Youth Risk Behavior Surveys). A number of physical activity variables were measured; including time spent participating in sports, exercise, recreation, other moderate physical activities, and sedentary activities, such as television watching and computer use.
