The Effect of Sport Facilities and Trail Systems on the Use of Green Spaces for Physical Activity Among Latino[a] Americans
Promotion of physical activity is particularly important for Latino(a) Americans, as they constitute the fastest growing and one of the least active minority groups in the United States. This study examines what types of amenities should be located within green spaces in order to maximize their use for physical activity among the Latino(a) population. The researchers hypothesize that men are more likely to use sports facilities in the parks and forest preserves, while Latina women are more likely to use the trails. Nine hundred Latino(a) American subjects will be interviewed and observed in 3 parks and 3 forest preserves in the Chicago area about their use of the facilities. A subset of the subjects will also be asked to wear an accelerometer and track their physical activity in more detail. Park attributes such as size, sports facilities, trail length, cleanliness, and safety will be collected through direct observation and existing data on the parks.
