The Equity of Federal Safe Routes to School Investments
The goals of this project are to: 1) Identify institutional models for state Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs; 2) Assess the influence of institutional structure on the location, size, and distribution of SRTS projects; and 3) Objectively assess the demographic characteristics of communities that have received SRTS funding and document how the different funding mechanisms established by each state have affected the equity of SRTS grants. The results of this study will be useful to policymakers as they deliberate on the reauthorization of the next federal transportation bill and state Departments of Transportation as they reassess their funding decisions for the SRTS program. Specific dissemination outlets will include the state SRTS coordinators through the National Center for Safe Routes to School and the annual Safe Routes to Schools conference. Investigators will also distribute findings to advocacy groups, such as the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, who will be working to increase funding for the program.
