Greenway Accessibility and Physical Activity Behavior in Two Michigan Cities
Designing an environment conductive to physical activity can complement other health promotion initiatives in Michigan to address the many health issues, including overweight and obesity, exacerbated by inactivity. Multi-use greenways are an example of a setting in which physical activity can be performed and also have the unique ability to intersect and connect varying spatial arrangements, types, and varieties of land uses. This dissertation analyzed the influence of the effects of residential proximity and connectivity of land uses on physical activity performed on urban greenways in Lansing and Battle Creek, MI. Spatial analysis determined the number of individuals living within a time determined distance of greenway access points and determined levels of connectivity to surrounding areas of attractive destinations. These geographic measures were compared to the rates and types of physical activity on different greenway segments.
