Improving Built Environment Measurement with Omnidirectional Imagery
The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the use of omnidirectional imagery (exemplified by Google Street View) as a resource for conducting observational audits of built environment characteristics known to be associated with physical activity in both youth and adult populations. Using street segments in suburban and urban areas of Indianapolis, IN and Saint Louis, MO, researchers tested the reliability of built environment measures obtained from interpretation of omnidirectional imagery by comparing results to measures obtained from person field audits. Collaboration with community practitioners and researchers occured in order to develop easy-to-use training materials and protocols for implementing image-based audits.
