Mejorando Nuestros Oportunidades para Recreación y Actividad Física: Engaging Youth in Research and Local Policy Advocacy
Moderate amounts of physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, in addition to reducing feelings of anxiety and depression. However 25% of youth ages 12-21 participate in no physical activity. Behaviors such as physical activity are influenced by physical and political environments, and the quality/condition of outdoor spaces and physical activity resources, such as parks and playgrounds, are directly influenced by local governmental and departmental policies. The purpose of this project is to understand how parks and playgrounds are managed and maintained and how they are used in Lawrence, MA. The objectives are to 1) conduct a study of the usage and quality/condition of outdoor spaces in tandem with 2) an examination of park and playground management and maintenance polices (inclusive of statutes, ordinances and codes), and 3) an assessment of departmental coordination and communication. The project will also conduct a policy study of local government and city departments with jurisdiction over outdoor spaces by reviewing policy data and conducting interviews with the directors of participating city departments.
