Minnie Street Evaluation
Minnie Street is a low-income community that suffered from serious problems of pedestrian safety, crime, and poor quality of life. The community is predominantly Latino and Cambodian. The City of Santa Ana, CA completed a dramatic, multimillion dollar urban design transformation of Minnie Street that included changes to street alignment, changes from parallel to angle parking, increased landscaping, and improvements to courtyards and building facades and interiors. This study examines the impacts of these urban design changes on traffic safety, perceived pedestrian safety, safety for children's play on the street, quality of life, and sense of community for Minnie Street residents.
