While individual attitudes are known to hold a major role in shaping behavior, it seems that the disconnect between measurement of the environment and the understanding of how people interact with it is ever growing. This study aims to build on previous research by examining the relationship between the built environment, walking behavior and perceptions. Montgomery County, Maryland was chosen as the study area because it contains a variety of urban density, age and racial mix, employment level, income and automobile ownership. The findings from this study are significant in their contribution to effective design of policy interventions targeted toward both the physical environment and the individual level.
