An Interactive GIS Based Model for Active Transportation in the Built Environment
By using active transportation and changing no other behaviors, an individual has the ability to meet the daily recommendation of physical activity. This project seeks to validate the performance of an interactive computer based/web model for active transportation in the built environment. The model will be an interactive tool which will allow users to enter start and end point; the tool will generate a route to maximize or minimize the user's energy expenditure or time. The model will incorporate features of the built environment, such as changes in elevation or climbing stairs. The aim for this project is to increase the active transportation of the user by providing a tool for the user to quantify their energy expenditures in the built environment. The model will be developed for the University of South Carolina campus, but can be easily transferred to another location with available GIS data.
