Impact of School-Based BMI and Fitness Screening and Reporting
The purpose of this study is to determine if parental notification of child weight status and fitness has an impact on obesity and fitness among youth at the population level. Investigators will also determine if parental notification of child weight status and fitness has an impact on health disparities. Specific policy aims will focus on determining the factors that influence the effectiveness of BMI and fitness screening and reporting and identifying opportunities for policy framing at the local, state and national levels. The study sample includes all children enrolled in 5th grade in California public schools between 1998 and 2004 and will reflect the diversity of the state’s population. The proposed research will produce information appropriate for both peer-reviewed journals and for dissemination to policymakers and those who work in and with schools, not only in California, but nationally.
