Physical Activity and the Built and Social Environment
This is a two-phase study of 5 to 18 year olds residing in Pennsylvania. In Phase I investigators will use electronic health record (EHR) data on height and weight on over 120,000 pediatric primary care patients residing in a 31-county region of central and northeastern PA to determine the association between the built environment (BE) and social environment (SE) and body mass index (BMI) and to determine how age modifies this association. Investigators will also determine how 3 built environment domains (land use environment, local physical activity opportunity environment, local food environment) and the social environment interact in their associations with BMI. In Phase II, investigators will use the results of Phase I to select 32 communities that vary on their BE and SE profile and risk of overweight. Within each community, investigators will select 15 youth and collect detailed data on the youth activity level and on their homes, schools, and community environments to determine the multi-level relations of household, school, and community environments on childhood physical activity.
