Exploring Physical Activity among Filipino American Youth
Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American/Pacific Islander population in the United States and they are projected to become the largest Asian American population by 2010. Some studies have found that Filipino Americans have a higher prevalence of various and mental issues that do not necessarily impact other Asian American groups. This project is the first of its kind to examine issues that affect the physical activity and nutrition of Filipino American adolescents. The purpose of the project is to conduct qualitative and policy research to understand the cultural, socio-economic, and mental health experiences that influence physical activity among Filipino American youth. The study population will consist of Filipino American adolescents from youth programs in four large Filipino American populations in New York and California. The study will utilize key informant interviews and open-ended focus groups. Data will be analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method.
