The primary objective of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the National Center for Safe Routes to School's parent and student surveys and to identify modifications to the surveys that will improve their utility as measures of school travel and barriers to walking to school. A convenience sample of six schools from the National Center's database was used to test the measures. Schools were evenly divided between urban, suburban, and rural areas; low and high social-economic status; and elementary and middle schools.
