This session mentored participants through California WALKS’ ongoing experience and best practices in empowering community residents to engage, advocate and convince local policy-makers to enact built environment and transportation policies that promote healthy, safe and walkable communities. In this workshop, California WALKS Youth Leaders led a participatory mini-walkability assessment, trained participants on how to capture community-driven participatory action research via video, and mentored participants in editing the handheld digital video recordings taken during the walk assessment to create rapid prototypes of VideoVoice projects that can be disseminated online and promoted through social media. Participants gained technical VideoVoice filming and editing skills, as well as strategies for moving beyond “token” community engagement. This workshop coached participants in effective engagement of community members—especially youth, parents and older adults—in making the case for walkable communities.
