Walking 101: Effective Policies and Strategies to Get Your Community Walking

Workshop at the 2013 Active Living Research Annual Conference.
This workshop began with a brief review of the growing national momentum for a walking movement in the US, a White House Conference on Active Transportation, a CDC “Vital Signs” report on the increase in the prevalence of walking, a National Walking Summit with sponsors that include CDC, ACSM, and Kaiser Permeate and a new Partnership between CDC and America Walks to provide technical assistance to communities that want to promote walking. This was followed by an interactive session describing effective strategies to promote walking based in two common scenarios: 1) communities with strong grass roots advocates but little or limited political support and 2) communities with political support but less developed grass roots support. The final portion of the workshop included an overview of existing community assessment tools such as the Walk Friendly Communities “Community Assessment Tool (CAT) and the America Walks “Steps to a Walkable Community”. Participants worked in small groups to review and complete selected sections of the CAT, followed by group discussions on how such tools can be completed and used effectively.
