Do Policies to Improve Physical Education Work?
The Challenge: Low-income children and children of color are less likely to have sufficient amount of good quality physical education (PE) in their schools.
Make an impact: California state law requires schools to provide PE instruction in elementary and middle schools. If properly implemented, this policy could lead to an increase in the number of students participating in physical activity during the school day.
What the findings are about: This study examined whether the implementation of the policy in the Los Angeles Unified School District is leading to improvements in the quantity and quality of PE in the district.
- Across all grade and socio-economic levels, there were increases in the average length of PE classes.
- Modest improvements occurred in the quantity and quality of PE, but the PE policy was not yet fully implemented throughout the district.
- It will be important to establish protocols to enforce compliance with the policy over the long term.
