Environmental Characteristics and Physical Activity Behavior in Recreational Areas
This project is developing several methods to evaluate parks, and the researchers are testing them in a large regional park in New Orleans, Louisiana. The idea is to integrate these data collection methods into a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) based inventory tool that can be adapted by other researchers. Bedimo-Rung’s team is creating a master data collection list that looks at park access, physical conditions, aesthetics, safety, and use. The team is sending observers into the field to survey these features while precisely locating them using Global Positioning System (GPS) units and aerial photography. The observations are being supplemented with information from direct observation, interviews with park managers, and from other data such as crime, traffic, and census statistics.
