Exploring the Role of Environmental Influences on Regular Physical Activity
This special project is adding an environmental component to a group of existing studies that are exploring the effectiveness of behavior-change programs aimed at increasing physical activity among women, older adults, and ethnic minorities. The studies are being conducted by 5 universities around the country that are members of the NIH-funded Behavior Change Consortium, including Stanford University in California and Emory University in Georgia. Researchers will ask study participants to answer a survey about their perception of walkability around their homes. King, of Stanford University, hopes to find out whether a more walkable environment near home makes it easier for the participants to become more active. The diversity of the studies and the study respondents should also help the researchers determine the influence of demographics or regional differences on activity levels.
