Factors Influencing the Use of Recreational Centers and Parks for Physical Activity by African American Adolescents
African American adolescents are disproportionately affected by overweight and obesity yet there is little research on environmental factors influencing physical activity in this population. This dissertation aimed to investigate environmental and personal factors influencing the use of recreation centers and parks for this at-risk population from the perspective of the adolescent. Using a cross-sectional qualitative and quantitative study design, data was collected from high schoolers at two Baltimore City schools. In-depth interviews and direct observation explored environmental influences as well as address influences specific to the recreational facility use. Results from the qualitative research was used to develop survey questions that are relevant to the study population.Learn more about Amy Vastine Ries, Ph.D., M.H.S. and her ALR project by reading her RWJF Grantee Profile.
