Modeling Urban Greenway Trail Use
Researchers from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) are creating a model that will allow decision-makers to predict potential use of trails. A main feature of the model should be an ability to calculate how much of a specific change (such as improving access to a trail, adding water fountains, or increasing shade) might be expected to increase trail use and physical activity among users. Lindsey’s team is measuring trail traffic with infrared monitors at 25 locations on 6 trails in the Indianapolis region. In addition, the team is surveying residents to learn how much they use the trails, how far they live from them, their levels of physical activity, and their socioeconomic characteristics. The team is using GIS data, field observations, and other data sources to identify trail and neighborhood characteristics. This data will be compared with trail use counts as a first step in creating the model. The goal is to create a model that will allow administrators and policy makers to estimate how much a specific improvement to a trail would boost its use.
