The Challenge: The health and physical activity of children can be affected by many attributes of where they live, including access to parks, crime rates, traffic safety, and availability of sidewalks. Government agencies and community organizations often make policies or start projects without knowing how these changes might affect the health of a community.

Make an impact: Health impact assessment (HIA) is a set of tools to help decision-makers consider how they can ensure that the health impact of their policy or project is positive.

What the findings are about: This study evaluated an HIA of an urban redevelopment initiative in St. Louis County, Mo.

Key Findings and Recommendations:
  • Working with people from a variety of relevant fields on an HIA can ensure that health outcomes of a major project are considered during the decision-making process.
  • Decision-makers as well as community members who will be affected by the new policy or project should work together before, during and after an HIA.
  • Finally, it is important for the HIA team to not be too closely affiliated with the decision-makers so that findings and recommendations are not biased.
