Arthritis is an under-recognized public health crisis. The number of adults with arthritis is expected to grow as the population of older Americans and number of obese Americans continues to increase. The burden of arthritis is widespread and costly – both to individuals and to the nation. Physical activity is an important strategy in reducing the burden of arthritis and multiple chronic conditions. The Arthritis Foundation recently released a report, Environmental and Policy Strategies to Increase Physical Activity Among Adults With Arthritis that focuses on the benefits of physical activity and ways to make physical activity more convenient and accessible to people with arthritis. The report is a comprehensive resource that calls on leaders and organizations in six sectors: community and public health; health care professionals; transportation, land use, and community design; business and industry; park, recreation, fitness and sport; and mass media and communication. During this workshop, the burden of arthritis was presented, as well as the benefits of physical activity for people with arthritis. Additional national initiatives and resources focused on increasing physical activity among adults with arthritis was presented. Participants were asked to brainstorm about potential implementation strategies in their community.
