Workshop at the 2012 Active Living Research Annual Conference.
Fear of liability among school administrators is a key perceived barrier to allowing community access to school sport and recreational facilities during non-school hours. This workshop provided an overview on the following: 1) what does the science say about community access to school property; 2) what are the various policy options available on the state and local level to promote community access of school property; and 3) what are the legal barriers to community access, and how to overcome those barriers. The presentation focused on how to overcome barriers and find solutions to promote community use of school property during non-school hours. Examples from various state and local groups were used to facilitate discussions, and sample policy language was shared.
