Federal Transportation Policy Implementation, Economic Investment in Low Resource Communities Through Safe Routes to School
This study extends previous research completing a unique data base tracking all federal expenditures on bicycle and pedestrian programs and improvements between 1990 and 2008. Amid the national perspective of federal investments in communities, investigators will expand and focus on the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program and associated funding initiated through current federal transportation legislation in order to measure successful implementation and document economic investment in low-resource communities. The findings of this investigation will help to inform local, regional, and national policy discussions on how states and federal funding programs can influence economic investments in low resource areas in order to support active environments for youth. Dissemination through policy networks will occur at local level and regional levels via relationships established with the Massachusetts Action for Health Kids and NECON, a regional network that promotes public health policy and practice in New England. Investigators will also work to disseminate findings through the Physical Activity Policy Research Network (PAPRN) and the National Safe Routes to School Partnership.
