Beyond Walkability: Health and Politics in the Rebuilding of New Orleans, Thomas Farley, MD, MPH, Tulane University

The damage caused by Hurricane Katrina provides a unique opportunity to rebuild the neighborhoods in New Orleans in ways that promote health. This opportunity is particularly valuable in Louisiana, with its large low-income minority population and health statistics that are among the worst in the country. This presentation will summarize the ways that features of neighborhoods can influence health, including not just walkability but also retail outlets, visibility, and blighted housing. The presentation will then review how the rebuilding of New Orleans is being planned and implemented, including the political opportunities and obstacles to creating health-promoting neighborhoods.
