Using the Community Park Audit Tool for Community-Based Advocacy and Environmental Change
Workshop at the 2013 Active Living Research Annual Conference.
Parks provide important venues for adult and youth physical activity. However, not all parks are created equal with respect to their size, quality, facilities and amenities, and surrounding neighborhood. Moreover, developing activity-friendly neighborhoods, including better parks, requires support from multiple constituencies. In 2010, the Community Park Audit Tool (CPAT) was developed through an RWJF Active Living Research grant as a user-friendly tool that would enable diverse stakeholders to quickly and reliably audit parks for their potential to promote physical activity. This interactive three-hour workshop will provide participants with an overview and training on using the CPAT. The first segment of the workshop will describe how park environments can facilitate physical activity and the value of engaging community stakeholders in active living research. Part 2 will be an introduction to the CPAT, including its content and how it was developed with a diverse team of community members. Part 3 of the workshop will include onsite use of the CPAT and group discussion and debriefing in a local park. Finally, participants will discuss how the CPAT can be used for advocacy and environmental change, as well as tips for organizing and running a CPAT workshop in your community.
