From Talking to Doing: A 5-Point Strategy for Sustainable Mobility
Gil Penalosa, Founder and Chair of the Board of 8-80 Cities, has delivered keynotes in over 180 different cities in all continents. Originally from Colombia where he was Commissioner and led the creation of hundreds of parks as well as the re-birth of Ciclovia / Open Streets, a program that sees over 1.3 million people go out into the streets to walk, bike, run, skate or other physical activity. For the past 15 years Gil has lived in Toronto, Canada, where 9 years ago he created the non-profit organization 8 and 80 Cities. The premise is simple: if everything that we did in our cities’ public spaces, such as streets, side-walks, parks, etc., was great for an 8 year old and for an 80 year old; then we’d have great communities for all, from 0 to over 100 years old. We need to stop building cities as if everyone was 30 years old and athletic. Gil discussed leading practices around the world for sustainable mobility and public spaces that encourage active living. He highlighted the sense of urgency, some of the problems, solutions, and presented his five point strategy to move from talking to doing.
